Indianapolis is the most heavily populated city in Indiana and is also the county seat of Marion County. Ranked in the Top 100 cities with the lowest cost of living, and Top 50 places to buy a house in the country, it’s no wonder young professionals and families alike flock to this gem of a city. Boasting a diverse population, Indianapolis is a city full of culture and things to do.
One of the most popular events of the year, which attracts people globally is the Indy 500, known formally as the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. Held annually at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over Memorial Day weekend, this IndyCar race is at the top level of American Championship Car racing. This event billed as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” – is one of the most prestigious events in motorsports. It is considered a part of the Triple Crown of Motorsports along with the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This exciting, heart-pounding event typically attracts over 300,000 screaming race fans.
Animal lovers of all ages go crazy for the Dolphin Adventure at the Indianapolis Zoo. This is the only place in the Midwest that offers the opportunity to get in the water and interact with these beautiful, intelligent creatures. The whole family will be elated by the one-of-a-kind experience of feeding the dolphins and being taught how to communicate with them using hand signals. Outside of the dolphin exhibit, the zoo offers many other wildlife exhibits, including a display of art created by elephants, penguins, sea creatures, and even the dolphins. Multiple species live in a re-creation of their habitats inside biomes. There, visitors can see the animals engaging in the daily life of their natural environment. Visit the desert and forest domes, where you can see everything from lemurs, meerkats, lizards, tigers, and bears. Oh my!
nother local favorite is the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. There are exhibits here to entertain and inform people of all ages. Slip down the Chocolate Slide, stand inside a dinosaur’s giant footprint, or go back to late 1800’s Indiana. With more than ten historical sites directly associated with the museum, there are days and days’ worth of fun and interesting facts to take in. One of the recent temporary exhibits was about Pulitzer Prize winner Rube Goldberg and his inventions. Have you ever seen an incredibly complex machine, consisting of many small parts, working together to complete an ultimately useless action like moving a ping pong ball through an obstacle course? You can thank Rube Goldberg for that. Museum visitors will be able to set off Rube’s contraptions as a part of the exhibit and a permanent exhibit is in the works.
